These are Gimpy’s Orphans. These piglets were separated from their birth mothers by trespassing hunters. Fortunately they found each other and somehow found Gimpy. We were surprised when Gimpy returned after days away, still hurting from his encounter with the hunters and his castration, with the three piglets in tow. Gimpy grew up overnight it seemed, as he became their guardian and their herd leader. These piglets are now healthy and happy, and help take care of Gimpy while he takes care of them. But they are still very young and will certainly suffer from Brucellosis. In a few months Big Sis and Little Sister will reach early breeding age and will fall under the harassment of the mature boars. We will take your donation and use it to try to find a cure for their disease and complete our implementation of the contraception vaccine in order to give Little Man, Little Sister and Big Sis a better life.
Thanks so much!
A little about the Orphans
Big Sis
Big Sis was born into a litter of seven siblings. She was one of the bigger piglets and one of the most adventurous. She also was becoming the leader of her siblings. When they acted badly or tried to play-fight with her, she would chase them and chase them until they gave up and realized the mistake they made to challenge her. Big SIs took on the role of older sister when she and the two other orphans were lost and then eventually found by Gimpy. Big Sis loves to play with new toys the humans put out for them. But she really likes to go into the garage and pull out human things like a tarp or bubble wrap. She loves the sound these make as she shakes them and steps on them. Watch the video at the bottom of this page! One of her favorite games, other than taking sticks and palm fronds from Little Sister, is to push around a little rock. She seems to like the design it makes as she pushes it in concentric circles. In the video below you can see her pushing her rock. She gets really irritated at Little Sister when she tries to take her rock.
Little Sister
Little Sister is the happiest pig around. She can always been seen with her little tail wagging constantly. She looks like she is smiling and she can always be heard talking and humming to herself. Yes, humming, that is the best way we can explain it. Little Sister lost her ears to hunters dogs which gives her a unique look. But she doesn’t care. She is happy. She is also the peacemaker. When the other pigs are fighting, she will get a palm frond or flower or stick and try to give it to the fighting pigs as a peace offering. She is also the first to check on a pig if they were hurt or chased off. It is as if she is comforting the other pigs. She talks constantly, especially when Little Man disappears. She will go looking for him, calling and talking non-stop. When he does return, she will chastise him, then tell him what has happened since he was gone, then how worried she was, and how he could have gotten hurt, etc. She loves to carry sticks and palm fronds. Just her thing. She also loves to go on short adventures with Little Man. She really likes to go to the Pig Pond when none of the other pigs are there. But she gets afraid in the dark and comes running back grunting and giggling with excitement. She will then spend a good half hour telling Uncle Gimpy all about the adventure and how afraid she was. She is truly a unique pig and a sweetheart.
Little Man
Little Man was nearly the runt of his litter. He lost his first mom, Fawnie, when she died of Brucellosis. It took about a week, but Little Man and his siblings were finally adopted by Big Sis’ mother Fat Mama. She was a good mother but really strict. Little Man would wander off from the others and would sometimes get left behind. He would have to follow the other pigs to find where she went. But he didn’t mind, he was a Big Boar. He was tough. He would hang out with the Big Boars, fighting them and winning, so he thought. Then the night came when the dogs attacked. Little Man was not paying attention and got separated again from Fat Mama and his brothers and sisters. But this time he could not find the other pigs. Eventually he heard Little Sister crying and calling and talking to herself. With Little Sister they found Big Sis. It was a bit scary, but he was a Big Boar so he didn’t let Little Sister know he was scared. Somehow they found Uncle Gimpy who was hurt. Little Sister made Uncle Gimpy feel better and Big Sis convinced him to head back to the place where we feel safe. So Little Man and his sisters escorted Gimpy back home where the humans fed them and kept them safe. Little Man accepted his position as the #2 Boar in Gimpy’s sounder. He loved to fight his sisters and show them he was the Big Boar. But when they started to annoy him (especially Little Sister with her constant chattering), he would go hang out with the Big Boars. On some nights, he would not leave when Gimpy left for the sleeping place, he would instead stay and hang with the boys. This was painful for him, though, because when he eventually rejoined Gimpy’s pack, Little Sister would ask him hundreds of questions and tell him what happened since he left. Little Man thinks he is bigger than he is, but then, that is how White Foot went from being the Runt to being the #1 Boar. In the next video, Little Man is starting a fight with Little Sister, then he bumps the Big Boar who thinks it was Big Sis who did it. Then he does it again and the Big Boar chases after Gimpy, all the while, Little Man is chasing Little Sister and then steals her palm frond. Little Sister takes her palm frond back. That palm frond became an object of play for the piglets all night long.
