Fawnie was a beautiful pig. She had a perfect deer brown coloration with white legs, belly and tail. She looked every bit like a white tailed deer. Because she loved to run everywhere and with her coloration, we named her Fawnie. Fawnie loved being a mother, although she kept her distance form the human researchers, she would allow her piglets come for treats under her watchful eye.
Fawnie contracted Brucellosis and in March 2026 brought her new litter of pigs to the facility after the normal 2 weeks of nursing and training at their birth site. It was evident to us that Fawnie was gravely ill. She could barely stand and was coughing up blood. To our astonishment, Fawnie went into the garage area and laid down inside our tool shed. Our pigs would never do that as it resembles a trap which they have experienced. It was clear to us that Fawnie had come back to our facility to bring her babies to be cared for so she could die. She survived that night and left without her piglets. We have not seen her since. Fat Mama, Fawnie’s ,other, who had a litter of pigs of her own, and Brownie took in Fawnie’s piglets. But when the hunters captured and castrated Gimpy, Fawnie’s young male, Little Man was separated from the group and orphaned with Little Sister and Little Brownie. It was surprising to us and a little humbling that so many of the pigs have come back to our facility to die, as if this was one of their favorite places where they felt the safest and most secure.
If you decide to donate in memory of Fawnie, we will take your donation and use it to try to find a cure for her disease and also help Gimpy give her piglet Little Man a better life.
