Big Red was one of the original piglets we first met. A full brother to White Foot, he was bigger and destined to be the strongest and leader of his litter and possibly the pack.  But White Foot was more aggressive and play-fought Big Red constantly to hone his skills and learn how to beat him in a real fight.  Big Red realized he was not cut out for the role as #1 boar but could serve as White Foot’s lieutenant of sorts instead. His role became one of stopping fights of the younger pigs and to jump in and protect White Foot if he was fighting a larger boar and potentially losing.  Big Red liked Ms Jane and would gravitate towards her when she was nearby.  He also loved Security Pig, even though she was not willing to be bred.  Surprisingly, she returned Big Red’s affections, in her own way.  They were often seen together eating, walking or sleeping.

Big Red was instrumental in one of our favorite moments.  We knew we had won over the hearts of the pack when we saw a line of pigs coming towards our facility from the swamp area.  In the front was Big Red with a palm frond in his mouth, waving it like a flag.  It was a scene from a Hollywood movie as they all marched in line behind the flag bearer as Big Red brought the palm frond as a gift for Ms. Jane.  Unfortunately, this was before we installed security cameras everywhere and we did not get a video record of this heartwarming but hilarious spectacle.  You can see his brother White Foot bring a palm frond to us in White Foot’s Story here.

Big Red started showing signs of suffering from migraines brought on by Brucellosis.  He would sit for hours staring into blankness and not moving. It was because of Big Red and later Brownie that we started our research into finding a cure for Brucellosis.  We continue this work in his memory.

If you decide to donate on behalf of Big Red, we will take your donation and use it to try to find a cure for his disease and give other pigs a better life.
